1 Six-year Term for U.S. President
25 years ago, when limitations on California politicians were first suggested, the initial reaction to any term limits was ridicule because such
legislation would never be enacted. The entrenched State legislators vehemently opposed any type of term limits.
George Will of the Washington Post, made this observation: “If the political class fought the nation's problems as tenaciously as it fights term
limits, America would be paradise by next Tuesday.”
However, the more the concept was talked about by the average citizen, the more it became acceptable. Finally, in 1990, California voters
approved Proposition 140, a state Constitutional Amendment imposing term limits on state politicians. Similar laws were quickly enacted in 22
states. That experience of so many states enacting term limits, now gives encouragement and determination to advocate the single six-year
term for the President.
