Thomas Jefferson in 1809 proposed it. A dozen American Presidents endorsed the idea, including Eisenhower, Johnson
and Carter.
A single 6-year term has been introduced in Congress more than 144 times by such diverse statesmen as: Senator
Fulbright, Senator Dirksen, Senator Aiken, and Senator Mansfield.
A single term for the President is not a new idea for the Democratic Party. It was previously a plank in their national
platform. And the Republican Contract with America (1994) promised to limit Congress. That Amendment did receive a
majority vote, but it was short of the needed 2/3’s.
